Told through the eyes of singer, John Hemmer, this documentary short chronicles a unique period in live entertainment history. John and his fellow entertainers, all of whom performed during America's nightclub heyday of the 1950s and 60s, offer a behind-the-scenes peek into an era like no other.

Having built a wide body of work for over 60 years, John continues to find creative outlets in his daily existence. His experiences bring to light why performing is unlike any other art-form and is often a calling that can’t be ignored.

Devoting decades to preserving the legacy of the famed Lou Walters’ Latin Quarter nightclub, John finds resilience in its band of showgirls and performers, despite life’s challenges that surfaced along the way.

JOHN HEMMER & THE SHOWGIRLS takes a celebratory glance inside the golden age of entertainment, while considering vanishing histories, personal and shared legacies, and what role community plays in one's vitality as we grow older.

This documentary short's eventual screening events will act as a tool for sharing and preserving untold cultural heritage through first hand accounts, and at the same time explore how common histories promote a sense of belonging that aid in one's well being over a lifetime.

The eventual dedicated site will offer the documentary in addition to oral histories and personal archival material from John and his show business cronies. To stay-up-to-date on this project's progress, sign up for the John Hemmer e-newsletter below.
